Indians immigrating to the U.S. can sponsor their family members to be U.S. citizens. Over 200,000 Indians are in line for family-sponsored legal permanent residency or a green card.
Fremont, CA: According to a news report by Republic World, more than 227,000 Indians are still waiting for family-sponsored legal permanent residency or a green card in the U.S. However, India is not on the top of the list. Mexico is leading the list with nearly 1.5 million people, with India on second position and China on third with almost 180,000 people. As per the law, the citizens can sponsor their family members along with blood relatives for permanent legal residency.
According to a different report by BOUNDLESS, Congress has put a limit on the employment-sponsored green cards at 140,000 per year. Currently, a large number of Chinese and Indian citizens received green cards via family sponsors as compared to employer sponsors. President Trump announced a new immigration reform plan, which includes radical changes to the allocation of green cards, according to the BOUNDLESS report. However, this proposal has a limited scope of becoming law shortly.
Trump's proposal would maintain the same number of new green card issues every year but based on the ‘point-based’ category designed to reward extraordinary talent, exceptional academic track records, and professional and specialized vocations. This law can be implemented by removing family-sponsored green cards for relatives by U.S. citizens.
President Trump wishes to eliminate the chain immigration, and the Democrats have opposed Trump from eliminating the system of family-sponsored immigration. According to a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman, Prakash Khatri, Indian Americans bring their entire family, and they become permanent residents before they get citizenship. Meanwhile, USCIS announced that they would start accepting H-1B petitions from April 1, 2020, for the next financial year.
USCIS mentioned that the electronic registration process would reduce paperwork and data exchange. Also, it provides overall cost savings to petitioning employers. As per the new method, the employers seeking H-1B workers subject to the cap or their authorized representatives would have to complete the registration with only necessary information about their company. The new electronic registration system is streamlining the H-1B selection process, which is helping USCIS in cost savings and efficiencies for the petitioners and the agency.
