Mistakes to Avoid During a Video Job Interview

A video job interview can be challenging at times, but most of them seem to be pretty much comfortable having this version. Explaining your career story at your own place is indeed great for your self-confidence as it is just playing at your home turf. But things can take an unexpected turn if you’re not turning your attention to the smallest of details. This article will explain you the mistakes you should avoid while attending a video job interview. [$$$$]

Environment

It’s very unpredictable than an office, when it comes to the events happening. At home, there can be housemates, kids or pets passing by without knowing the fact that there is an interview happening. Always make sure the place you pick is very quiet and less accessible to others. Kindly ensure that the background doesn’t show any unnecessary posters, books or messy table. Keep away the household telephones, keys, and other important things that other housemates require, because it’s not nice to interrupt your interviewer as they’ll be on time constraints.[$$$$]

Professionalism

Most of the people tend to be relaxed or more casual as they’re not in the same room the interviewer is. This creates complacency and people have a tendency to forget that they’re actually attending an interview. The interviewer must think that the person he is interviewing must be really amped up for the interview as it shows the respect and value it gives for the opportunity given. Sitting straight with proper attention is crucial even if you’re at a different place. Plus, dress properly like the same way you do to the office as it is really important to convey that you’re taking this interview quite seriously.[$$$$]

Eye-Contact

Regular eye-contact with the interviewer makes you confident and it helps in the healthy flow of conversations. Proper eye-contact is a signal given that shows that connection is made and it’s totally okay if you’re looking down occasionally to take down notes as it clearly indicates the amount of engagement and care dedicated. Prior to the interview, make certain that good eye-level positioning and head and shoulders are framed in the screen. Most importantly, never look at the mini version of you in the video call to check whether you’re fine.[$$$$]

Internet Connection/Microphone/Battery

This is yet another important factor for having a successful video interview. Always check the internet connection twice or thrice before the interview. Getting interrupted in between a heated conversation is just suicidal. It not only kills the flow but also makes you low in confidence. Try video chatting with your pal well in advance to see whether the connection is good enough to complete the interview. Check the microphone, charge of the device you’re using to avoid distractions in between.[$$$$]

Lighting

Imagine attending an interview with poor lighting; it creates such a bad impression as the interviewer  finds it extremely difficult to judge the facial expressions. It is recommended that always make use of the sunlight if the lighting is very poor. And if it’s not possible, then better to move a light behind your laptop or computer, but always test it with your friend beforehand, because sometimes it can be too bright, but always better than attending the interview at dim light.
