E-commerce giant Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced a USD 1 billion investment in India to bring small and medium-sized businesses online in India. The company had previously invested USD 5.5 billion in the country. Jeff Bezos, who is in India to attend Amazon's Sambhav summit, stated that Amazon would use its size, scope, and scale to export goods made in India worth USD 10 billion by 2025. The Amazon CEO also emphasized the importance of an alliance between India and the U.S. in the 21st century, which he believes belongs to India. "The dynamism, the energy, the growth. This country has something special, and it's a democracy," said Bezos.
The three-day visit was kicked off with a visit to Rajghat, where Bezos paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He was spotted wearing a white kurta and fitted pajamas, along with a rust-colored Nehru jacket. During the visit, the billionaire is expected to visit top government officials, business leaders, small enterprises, and celebrities. The mega event Sambhav has been organized to bring together small and medium businesses that work with online retailers as sellers, distributors, and logistics partners. The event is being attended by over 100 global leaders and industry experts, more than 3,000 small and medium businesses, startups and entrepreneurs, over 70 business and tech partners, and policymakers. Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy also participated at the event and delivered a speech.
Bezos is scheduled to meet Bollywood celebrities in Mumbai on Thursday, keeping an eye out for the entertainment unit of his business, Amazon Prime Video. Bezos is also set to engage in a fireside chat with Shah Rukh Khan and Zoya Akhtar in a closed-door event. Music composer A.R. Rehman will be performing at the event. The Amazon CEO was also spotted flying kites with Indian kids.
