Get ready to exploit the opportunities presented by the mainframe world!

Arvind was the personification of the average Indian job seeker. His comprehensive resume and a host of certification courses did not impress prospective employers. So he turned to the mainframe industry which eventually helped him find a job -- as a mainframe specialist. This is a common occurrence in the mainframe world which trains youngsters to become successful professionals.


A few years ago, Microsoft and the Robert Frances Group conducted a study which led them to the conclusion that opportunities presented by the mainframe world were on the rise. The current Indian economic scenario is buoyant with employers announcing pay hikes or all set to announce pay hikes. The world of Java, Linux and .NET among many others may lure many individuals but only the smart few make the transition to the mainframe world. Statistics reveal that more than 80% of the workforce is older than 50 and hence the demand for youngsters has been on the rise.

Major Mainframe Skills

Mainframe skills can be grouped under three distinct categories as follows:

Applications Developers (e.g., COBOL, JCL, CICS, and IMS)

System Operations and System Programmers (e.g., CICS, IMS, and VTAM)

System Administrators

COBOL plays a major role in the mainframe world. With more than 100 billion lines of COBOL code characterizing the industry, the language is conspicuous in this market. Don’t be surprised if you see the demand for COBOL professionals escalate. COBOL is a major tool that helps mainframes function accurately. System Operations and System Programmers and Administrators constitute the core.

Nearly all mainframes have the ability to run (or "host") multiple operating systems and thereby operate not as a single computer but as a number of virtual machines. In this role, a single mainframe can replace dozens or even hundreds of smaller servers, reducing management and administrative costs while providing greatly improved scalability and reliability.

Mainframes can add system capacity non-disruptively and granularly. Modern mainframes, notably the IBM zSeries and System z9 servers, offer three levels of virtualization: logical partitions (LPARs, via the PR/SM facility), virtual machines (via the z/VM operating system), and through its operating systems (notably z/OS with its key-protected address spaces and sophisticated goal-oriented workload scheduling, but also Linux and Java/Dot Net).

Mainframe return on investment (ROI), like any other computing platform, is dependent on its ability to scale, support mixed workloads, reduce labour costs, deliver uninterrupted service for critical business applications, and several other risk-adjusted cost factors. The general consensus (held by Gartner and other independent analysts) is that the modern mainframe often has unique value and superior cost-effectiveness, especially for large scale enterprise computing.

IBM Mainframes also have unique execution integrity characteristics for fault tolerant computing. System z9 servers execute each instruction twice, compare results, and shift workloads "in flight" to functioning processors, including spares, without any impact to applications or users. Not all applications absolutely need the assured integrity that mainframe systems provide, but many do, such as financial transaction processing.
