Originally founded as Packetcom, Caspian has around 323 employees but the number dwindled to less than 100 when the company filed for bankruptcy. Caspian raised around $85 million in series C round of funding from Merrill Lynch & Co., ABN AMRO's private equity arm and many others. In 2005, Caspian raised $55 million in private equity, bringing its total funds to $300 million, and hoped to become profitable. The company invested in core routing, P2P networking, and net neutrality, which saw the investors pull out.
