Verizon Wireless starts updating the Motorola Droid

Bangalore: Verizon Wireless has started updating the system software of the Motorola Droid. The change log is pretty long, and includes among other things, better battery life, a fix for the camera, and more OS stability. Verizon Wireless Spokesperson Brenda Raney said in an email to Information Week, "We began pushing the update to the Droid by Motorola yesterday to a small percentage of handsets. So consumers are beginning to see the alert on their handsets. The process is being done in phases and the number of handsets that receive the update will increase gradually over the next week or so. It is identified as ESD56 and includes enhancements to the phone." All three parties involved - Google, Motorola, and Verizon - are participating in the software fix. Verizon doesn't say which company contributed to which changes. The change log for the Motorola Droid fix includes, OS stability improvement, battery life improvement, camera auto focus functionality improvement, time between shots to be reduced, enhancements for three-way calling, audio for incoming calls to be improved, when receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone is to remain on, and bluetooth functionality is to be improved. Additionally, the background echo is to be eliminated, there will be improved bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle bluetooth solutions, after closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically be removed from the notification panel, users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS message is received, SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses, Google contact merging has been updated to accommodate seven-digit numbers, Visual Voice Mail notices now arrive instantaneously and the corporate calendar widget user interface is updated. Verizon also indicated that it is planning to update the Droid Eris to Android 2.0 or 2.1, but hasn't settled on a time frame for that update.
