THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A food park built at a cost of 200 million will be launched in Kerala Thursday to promote the processed food sector in the state. Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the Food Park in Malappuram. Situated on a 60-acre campus near Calicut University, the park is expected to attract the processed food industry that is a fast growing sector in Kerala. "We expect this park to be home to at least 30 to 40 units," said C.G. Gopala Pillai, chief of the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation. "Already four units have started functioning. The Parrysons edible unit has clocked a record turnover of 750 million in its first year of operation." The corporation owns the park and is responsible for its development. Among the highlights of this park is an incubation centre to help new entrepreneurs. They will be able to market their products using the incubation centre's food licence. Anyone who wants to start a new food unit but doesn't have the capital can use the incubation centre. "We see bright prospects for the incubation centre because Kerala is home to several ethnic food products," said state Industries Minister P.K. Kunjalikutty at a new conference here Tuesday. P.H. Kurian, the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation managing director, said the food park could be home to several units engaged in the same type of business. "Already we have got in touch with five different clusters that are engaged in the manufacture of the famous Kozhikode halwa, pickles and other food. "These units could use the facilities at the incubation centre to market their products and also experiment with new products," said Kurian. The food park is also in the process of getting a laboratory to be run by private parties and food technologists. "The Indian government as well as the Kerala government see this sector as a thrust area," said the minister.
