Bangalore: A recent survey by Foote Partners' on IT skills and certifications has revealed that IT professionals who have IT certifications like MCTS (Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist) and CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) do not get a high pay boost as compared to employees who have technical knowledge and experience in the same field. Foote says that Noncertified employees getter fatter premiums than the certified employees.
Foote has tracked the pattern of companies paying for 483 certified and non-certified employees since 2004 and looking at the numbers they concluded that the pay for the noncertified skills have risen in 21 of the past 26 quarters and the pay premiums have dropped in 17 of the part 18 quarters for the certified.
David Foote, CEO and Chief Research Officer of Foote Partners said that employers value employees who have more experience than the employees who have number of certifications. He said that if they had to choose between certified or experienced employees, it is very obvious that they would go for the experienced employee and will be ready to pay a higher premium as well.
Some of the common reasons why they choose experience over certification is, although the person is certified he would not have any real time experience about the job and will have to be trained from scratch whereas the experienced person will have to be just updated and he will be able to apply his previous experience knowledge in his present work.
In the past couple of years the average premium pay for IT certifications has dropped 4.6 percent. Employees who hold certifications like "beginner and training" category have no light of pay premiums, people with networking and communications certification have see a decline of 10.4 percent in their pay premiums. Further, certifications in skills pertaining to architecture, project management, and process saw a 6.1 percent drop in premium pay.
But the non- certified employees having nothing to complain about and have seen a rise in their pay premiums of about 2.88 percent in the last couple of years. People who had skillful hands in app development and platform oriented tools have seen a jump in their pay scales in the previous year up to about 5.1 percent.
