Bangalore: The increased use of video on mobile devices and the ever growing numbers of tablets and smartphones will be the driving factors in mobile data traffic growth in the coming years. Cisco, the computer networking giant, has revealed in its forecast that mobile data traffic is set to grow 26-fold from 2010 through 2015.
On an annual basis, the growth in mobile data will be about 92 percent. Cisco projects that by the year 2015, there will be over 5.6 billion devices for personal use and about 1.5 billion machine-to-machine devices.
India will witness the fastest mobile data traffic growth, with a 158 percent annual growth. This is followed by South Africa and Mexico.
Of the total data traffic, two-thirds of it will be of mobile videos, which Cisco says is the highest among all the mobile data applications. The prediction also tells that the traffic from tablet PCs will see an exponential growth to 205 times in this period. This is the most for any of the mobile devices.
Geographically, Africa and Middle East will lead the way in maximum growth in mobile data traffic. This will be followed by Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific. The last three regions in the list are North America, Japan and Western Europe.
Basing on recent trends, Cisco also projected that by 2015, the mobile network connections will see a ten fold increase in speed (from 215Kbps in 2010 to 2.2Mbps in 2015).
