Bangalore:Android's seemingly irrepressible march to worldwide 'smartphone 'dominance continues. While Android has shown considerable growth this year, research firm Gartner claims 'its best days may be yet to come.' New research has confirmed, Android's growing dominance in mobile phones across Europe. Android accounts for 38 percent of the market in the UK. In France and Germany, the figure is 35.9 percent and 35.5 percent respectively. Japan and the U.S. are even more successful markets for Android. Android operating system now has a market share of 25.5 percent worldwide, up from 3.5 percent in the same period a year ago. More than 20.5 million Android handsets were sold in the third quarter, up from 1.4 million devices over the same period a year ago. Android's success in the future market will be owed much to its use in reasonably priced smartphones. Manufacturers such as Samsung continued to launch high-end Android devices like the 'Galaxy S', but manufacturers also launched Android devices at lower prices to target different consumer segments. Gartner said that Android was particularly dominant in the U.S., with an estimated 75 to 80 percent of all smartphones sold by Verizon in the third quarter. The firm says that by 2014, as many as 259 million Android phones could be shipped. The dominance of Android has shrunk Apple's share by 16 percent worldwide.
