World's Least and Most Expensive Cities for Expats 2014


Paris: This survey is important for Paris considering it houses the headquarters of 30 of the Fortune 500 companies. This is a rich city with one of the largest GDP in the world. Paris, which was the eighth most expensive city last year, has moved up six places to be declared the second most expensive city this year. 1 kg loaf of bread in Paris costs $8.44, more than any city in the world. The average price of a bottle of table wine is $11.45, which is cheaper than many other countries. The EIU report says, “Paris does not have any expenditure categories where the cost of living is disproportionately high, but is costlier than most locations for seven out of the ten categories included in the worldwide cost of living survey.”

Oslo: The Norwegian capital considered as a global city is also known for its high quality of life. This city is an important place for the marine industries. The Economic Intelligence Unit declares Oslo as the third most expensive city in the world after Singapore and Paris. The EIU calculates the average price of 1 liter unleaded petrol in Oslo at $2.41, average price of 1 kg loaf of bread at $5.91, average price of a bottle of table wine at $17.13 and average price of 20 branded cigarettes at $15.44. Oslo is expensive for entertainment and recreational activities.
