Different Forms of Martial Arts in India
Thang Ta:
Thang Ta is also known as Huyen Lallong and is the most popular and ancient weapon based Manipuri Martial Art created by the Meitei. In Manipuri language, ‘thang’ means sword and ‘ta’ means spear, therefore sword and spear are the two basic elements of this art. Spear can be used in its non-missile form, close or thrown from. Other weapons used are shield and axe.
Lathi:
Lathi means stick and this martial art involves fighting with cane sticks. Typically the ‘lathi’ is a 6 to 8-foot (2.4 m) stick which is sometimes tipped with metal. This art is practiced majorly in Punjab and Bengal, it still remains as one of the favorite sport in Indian villages. Lathi is also used as a crowd control device by the Indian Police.
