4. Palace of Nanyue Kingdom, Guangzhou, China
The Western Han Nanyue King's Tomb Museum is situated on the Jiefang North Road of Guangzhou, on the Xianggang Hill which is to the west of Yuexiu Park. The Tomb was buried 20 meters below the Xianggang Hill and there are seven chambers. It was discovered in June 1983 and has been considered as one of the five top archaeological discoveries of China during these years.
The museum is said to be divided into four parts. The first part presents the history of the Nanyue Kingdom. The second shall stress the magnificence of the palace and its gardens. The third part exhibits relics and archives about Guangzhou in general. The last part focuses on Guangzhou's water well culture.
The museum is built on top of the ancient palace but all the ruins are covered by transparent glass offering an amazing view of the 2000-year old structure.
However, China's ever-expanding population and interest in urbanization threatened the very existence of the site.
