W3C Launches Web Standards Tutorial Site
Bangalore: The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has launched a web site to advise web developers on web standards, including the emerging HTML5 set of standards. The W3C assured that the web site will shed light on the latest open source technologies and its use to build web applications. The site has also been designed to provide more user feedback to the developers of the Web standards themselves.
"Although we have produced material for designers and developers in the past, this is the W3C's biggest scale effort specifically for documentation," said Ian Jacobs, the W3C head of marketing and communications.
The Web Platform Docs is mainly contributed by some of the internet giants like Adobe, Facebook, Google, HP, Microsoft, Mozilla, Nokia and Opera. Jacobs also said that most of the companies have also made long-term pledges of monetary contributions.
"Often companies have relatively small teams who have a hard time keeping up with the rapid pace in standards," Jacobs said. "So for them, there is a benefit of better using their resources at the vendor neutral W3C."
According to Jacob, the chat and discussion forums should provide better insights into web standards and its uses. Users can appreciate the current information about standards and this feedback will be used as a platform by standard developers to improve their work.
The Web standards documentation site features tutorials on latest technologies like HTML5, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and various audio, video and animation tags. Image manipulation tools such as the Canvas tag, WebGL, and SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) image, and data storage technologies such as media queries, Indexed DB and the File API are also covered within the web site.
