Orkut is designed to help users meet new and old friends and maintain existing relationships. The website is named after its creator, Google employee Orkut Buyukkokten. It is one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil though it is less popular in the United States than competitors Facebook and Myspace. As of July 2011, 58.1 percent of orkut's users are from Brazil, followed by India with 32 percent and Japan with percent. Over the years, orkut has also found great popularity in Estonia as witnessed by a survey conducted by the independent research center GfK Custom Research Baltic which showed how orkut is the most used social network platform in that country. 6. Today Facebook rules the social networking on the web. This website launched in February 2004 and at present it has more than 750 million active users. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg .The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities as well. A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking users in the world, followed by My Space. Entertainemnt Weekly included the site on its end-of-the-decade "best-of" list. Quantcast estimates Facebook has 138.9 million monthly unique U.S. visitors in May 2011.
