NEW DELHI: An Indian subsidiary of a German company in partnership with Jaiprakash Industries Ltd. has bagged a 280-million-euro deal for a hydropower project in Madhya Pradesh. The Omkareshwar Hydropower Project, on the Narmada river in Khandwa district, is being built by the Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corp Ltd, a joint venture of the state-run National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) with the Madhya Pradesh government. After commissioning, it will be among India's major hydropower stations - with eight units of 65 MW rated capacity each, totalling an output of 520 MW. The project is to be completed within 48 months. The German company involved in the project is Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation. The power station is one part of the Narmada dam and irrigation project being executed by the Madhya Pradesh government. Voith Siemens Hydro, which established a local subsidiary here nine months back, will supply the complete electro-mechanical equipment consisting of eight vertical units (Francis turbines and synchronous generators) along with associated auxiliaries and a 220 kV outdoor switchyard for the power project. The consortium partner Jaiprakash Industries, a diverse group based here, would be handling the civil engineering component of the power project.
