U.S. Unit Offers India To Co-Develop, Test Carbon Capture Tech

"Southern Company is developing real solutions to meet future energy needs with clean, safe, reliable and affordable power," Southern Company general manager of research and development Steve M Wilson told PTI.

"An important example of our longstanding commitment to research and development, the National Carbon Capture Center serves as a critical bridge to advance carbon capture technology," Wilson said.

Officials at the NCCC have had two recent trips to India, meeting top Indian officials, and those from the private sector and industries as well.

The NCCC delegation is expected to travel to India for another round of talks after the general elections.

Noting that India being one of the major emitters of CO2 in of the world, along with the U.S. and China, NCCC experts feel that international collaboration is critical to CO2 emission reduction.

Testing at this state-of-the-art facility will allow CCS and NCCC participants to share lessons learned from previous carbon capture technology development.

According to latest statistics India is emitting around two billion tonnes of CO2 per year and it is increasing every year.

Observing that as many as 70 percent of power in India is generated by coal-fired power plants, experts argue that India needs to join the initiative so it can become a member of an elite research facility.

This will allow India scientists to be part of the various carbon capture technologies being developed globally.
