Two Atom chips to boost performance of a netbook
Bangalore: Colombian computer maker Haleron has designed a netbook which can provide the performance of a standard laptop at a lower price. The company has installed two Intel's Atom N270 processors in its new netbook Swordfish Net N102, running at 1.6GHz. The netbooks usually have a single Atom chip. "The standard notebook or laptop computer, although an industry standard around the world, was out of reach for many Latin Americans. A netbook with a single Atom chip just could not support the multitasking needs of students and professionals," said the company. The company modified Intel's 945 chipset to run the two processors, which took around six months to develop. The processors divide the workload like a dual core processor. The netbook running on two processors effected the battery life, as the three-cell battery provides only two and a half hours of run time, so the company offers an additional six-cell battery that adds up to four and a half hours of use. "We have developed what we feel is the best solution for a load sharing dual Atom processor netbook," said the company. The netbook is priced at $449, as the optional six-cell battery is priced for another $29. It has 2GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It also contains a webcam, a 4-in-1 card reader and built-in Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) 3G broadband module and 802.11b/g wireless networking. The netbook has Windows XP Home Edition operating system. "We found that it works best on the Windows XP operating system. Both Windows Vista and the new Windows 7 performed below Windows XP in the load sharing department," the company stated.
