Top 5 Wine Myths That Won't Die

3. Who Invented Champagne?

The common belief is that the French invented sparkling wine; however, it is not true.  French may have perfected sparkling wine but didn’t invent it. It was in England, the sparkling wine was made first. And it was done 19 years before the commonly believed founder of sparkling wine, monk Dom Pérignon discovered how to produce it by accident as fermentation returned to bottled wine producing bubbles. While the original invention had more to do with glass blowing technology than winemaking, the monk is credited with the introduction of key elements of the Champagne style such as blending different grapes and vintages to produce a consistent product and the use of cork and metal foil to seal the bottles for secondary fermentation.
