Sharmila Bhattacharya

Bhattacharya is the Chief Scientist for Astrobionics at NASA Ames Research Center who is the head of the Biomodel Performance and Behavior laboratory as well.

According to Bhattacharya, medals or the money that she gets are not the tools for measuring success; success according to her is when she watches her experiments flown in space, a dream fueled by her father since childhood. He told her that being a girl does not stand as a barrier from being “absolutely anything [she wanted] to be” words which Bhattacharya took to her heart and helped her to achieve a successful career in NASA.

Her advice for the young is “to work hard, believe in yourself, and choose to work on something that truly interests you.”

Bhattacharya started her career at NASA as a payload scientist at the NASA Ames Center.

She holds master’s and doctorate degrees in molecular biology from Princeton University and has done post-doctoral research in neurobiology from Stanford University.
