Bangalore: Popular social networking site Facebook has released its 2010 Memology: Top Status Trends of the Year. As per the release, although the elderly people are logging in to the site, it is the younger generation that dominates Facebook, writes Alison Diana of the Information Week. Here are the top ten status trends in Facebook.
HMU
HMU is the shorthand for "hit me up" which means "give me a call, text, or instant message". Although it didn't have that much use in 2009, this year saw a tremendous growth of its use. It was in May 2009, when the acronym HMU started gaining some momentum with an average of 20 posts a day. By the end of 2009, it touched 1,600 posts per day. With an increasing rate of 75 percent, HMU reached 80,000 posts a day by the end of summer in 2010.
World Cup
World Cup, which was also the second-most popular status trend in Twitter's analysis of top trends of the year, created a much attention .The starting of the event generated 1.5 million mentions, while its final generated 1.3 mentions.
Movies
The third-most popular status trend is Movies. People love to discuss about their favourite movies in their Facebook status very often. There are five most-discussed movies by Facebook users - "Toy Story 3", "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse", "Inception", "Alice in Wonderland" and "Iron Man 2".
Apple's products
Apple products like iPad and iPhone 4 are next that come in the list. These products were the subjects of over 25 million Facebook posts during 2010. In Twitter's list of top status trends its iPad that comes alone at the sixth spot.
January 12 Haiti earthquake
According to Lars Backstrom, a data scientist at Facebook, within one minute of the earthquake, the first status was posted in the site. After four minutes, the rate of posting went up to 120 posts per minute. A day after the earthquake, it had gone up to 1,800 posts per minute. In the Twitter's list, the Haiti incident is at the second spot.
Justin Bieber
The teen singing sensation is at the sixth spot. It was his debut on the MTV Video Music Awards on September 12 that generated the most status posts. Bieber is placed eight on Twitter's list.
Facebook Games
The seventh spot on the list is occupied by the Facebook games. According to Backstorm, the biggest trending phrase was "barn raising".
The 33 Chilean miners
The Facebook users also discussed about the 33 Chilean and their 69 days underground making them the eight most-mentioned subject. The status went up when the mine first collapsed, when the miners were found alive and the rescue plan was created.
Airplanes
Because of the lyrics of the hit song "Airplanes", the word airplanes found its place in the ninth place. Facebook users use to post a specific line: "Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars..."
2011
It is the new year that comes in the tenth position. As the new year is drawing closer, posts on 2011 are increasing at a steady rate.
