Most men don't like to experiment. They wear ties that fall within a definite domain in terms of style. So, it'll rather be an illogical attempt to buy a tie that's too far outside of that range. For instance, if he wears a tie with stripes then stick with the strips, don't buy him a bow tie unless he already wears it. If a man wears a silk tie with a repeated pattern, then go for something in that category.
