The month of opened up with an extortion threat from hackers over Belgian credit provider Elantis. The hack group threatened to publish sensitive customer information, if the bank refused to make an extortion payment of $197,000. Later Elantis confirmed the breach but refused to make the payment.
Another hack that made the headlines was Anonymous breaching into a U.S. Department of Justice website server tied to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics and threatening to release over 1.7GB of stolen data. About the hack, the group announced that "We are releasing it to end the corruption that exists, and truly make those who are being oppressed free." The data was offered on The Pirate Bay.
Another notable security mishap was by Yahoo who accidently leaked the private key that was used digitally to sign its new search and browsing tool, Axis. This forced Yahoo to release a new version of the Axis search for Google Chrome.
