Deshpande also served as the directors of Airvana, a provider of network infrastructure producers used by wireless carriers. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of A123Systems, Sycamore Networks, Tejas Networks and Sparta Group. He is also the Life Member of the MIT Corporations, the board of trustees at the MIT. In July 2010, he was appointed as the Co-Chairman of 'National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship', a group set up to support U.S. President's innovation strategy. He along with his wife Jayashree Deshpande donated $20 million to the MIT to start Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation.
