Sony Betamax
One of the all-time classic brand failures in the technology section was Sony's Betamax video recorders. Within few years of its launch, there were several Japanese companies manufacturing and marketing VHS (video home systems). Whereas Sony either was unwilling or unable to license Betamax technology and its rival JVC was happy sharing their VHS format and later proved to be a critical factor in the demise of Betamax. Sony pioneered in most of the advancements in technology, but its competitors were not behind catching these.
Seeing more competition, Sony's competitors dropped their prices much below assumptions. In 1979, Universal Studio and Disney took legal action against Sony, claiming VCRs were infringing the copyrights of movie producers. In the later years, video owners became increasingly aware of one serious failing that was the time frame of one hour which Betamax could record when compared to other recorders that recorded for a considerable time period.
