Telepresence, utility computing yet to attract India
Bangalore: A change in the Indian firms' attitude to move from traditional communication equipments to concepts like telepresence and utility computing is yet to catch up. "Concept of utility computing has not gained much popularity among Indian organizations. They are scrutinizing it," said Sanjiv Bhagat, Managing Director, AT&T Global Network Services India. The company also pointed out that it has bagged two customers for its telepresence from the financial sector, who are global companies with India presence, the names of the two firms were denied to reveal. The revelations were made on the sidelines of a press meet where the firm proclaimed its plans of $1 billion worldwide capital expenditure for 2009. A part of the investment will be for India to strengthen its growth in the market which is the fastest growing market for the company in terms of revenue. The investments will be used mainly for the deployment of new subsea fibre optic cable capacity to Alaska, Australia, Asia Pacific, India, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, and on trans-Atlantic routes to Europe. AT&T has witnessed a decline of around three percent in the rate of increase of its revenue in 2008 compared to 2007, due to the severe impact of the recession in the IT/ITeS sector.
