Where is India's Blue Army?
Bangalore: Gone are the days when countries are attacking each other with missiles or weapons. Now with the development of technology, the attacking method has also changed. It is the era of cyber warfare. Cyber attack is becoming the new way to attack one country and to steal their information. Countries are training to have their own hacktivists. We can start our story with the example of the hacking of U.S. government officials. Hundreds of personal Gmail accounts which also include some senior U.S. government officials and military personnel were hacked as a result of a massive phishing originating from China. But though the attacks have been traced to China, but there were nothing to prove that it was directed by the Chinese government, although, the Chinese government denied their involvement in this matter. Google disclosed that the attack is not only targeting the U.S. government officials, but also human right activists, journalists and South Korea's government. Moreover Google hasn't openly accused the Chinese government of being involved and it has tracked that the attack is originated form Jinin, China, which is the home to a Chinese military school. WSJ reports that the hackers send e mails to people and the emails basically appear genuine for which the recipient responds. But he/she is not aware that their response would place malicious software on to the computer which is programmed to perform multiple functions, such as tracking all keystrokes or providing full access to an organization's computer network. They frequently are used to obtain access to passwords and private correspondence. However, the hacker's storey does not end here. Unknown hackers attacked the site of Lockheed Martin, a top American military weapons developer. Lockheed Martin provides equipment for the U.S. and British armies. Well, now when we come back to India and about the security issues of India, we are still not sure if India is ready for any such attacks? Or should India be worried for such attack? It is high time for India to make sure that our information is safe enough and how we can get rid of cyber attacks. There is a reason to worry, when we all think that CBI's Website is one of the most secure website in the country, but in December 2010, it was being hacked by a group from Pakistan. But the hackers did not damage or steal any data, they just left a message. Moreover, many incidents in India say that people complaining about spam messages delivered to their friends without their knowledge. In the year of 2007, The Bank of India web site was hacked and many Bank customers had been infected by the attack. In 2010, Wing Radar system of ISRO was hacked in Sriharikota. According to the information of Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) of the Department of Information Technology found that a number of government Websites were breached during January 2005 to February 2008. The Indian government is taking steps to protect its websites from hackers, and they have started evolving a mechanism to issue advanced warnings and alerts on cyber attacks. According to a study by Symantec, between 2009 and 2010, the numbers of Web-based attacks have increased by 93 percent. With the rising number of attacks in India, the government should take serious action towards the matter. Do you think India will be able to handle this crisis? Will it be able to keep its information safe from the hackers?
