Time for India to evolve 'policy on privacy': Nilekani
New Delhi: With a growing fear of the personal details being compromised or put in the public domain, UID Chief Nandan Nilekani calls for a policy on privacy. The issue of privacy cropped up when the IT czar turned-public planner was faced with queries about confidentiality of database of the proposed UID (Unique Identity) Authority at an interaction with civil society members working on NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act). "A policy to strike a balance between the Right to Information (RTI), which requires disclosure of information in public interest, and the privacy of an individual can be evolved," Nilekani said. Commenting on the secrecy with which the personal details like address would be treated, Nilekani said that nobody would have access to the UID database and the verifications done through the UID numbers would only be limited to confirming the genuineness of one's identity. While, he pitched that many websites listed personal details like address of individuals which could be accessed by anyone, demands a thought over a policy on privacy. Nilekani's idea may be seen as relevant by observers as he placed it in the context of internet increasingly bringing personal details in the public domain as well as the requirement of the security agencies tasked with battling terrorism.
