Organizations conceive that IT bandwidth has been declined as a result of social media. The top two negative consequences of increased social media usage were diminished productivity (89 percent) and reduced IT bandwidth (77 percent), which increased costs. Just under half (47 percent) consider exposure to inappropriate content as a negative consequence.

The Ponemon Institute-Websense study coincided with a Gartner study which revealed that worldwide social media revenue is set to reach $10.3 billion this year. Worldwide social media revenue is anticipated for even growth with 2012 revenue totaling $14.9 billion, and the market is projected to reach $29.1 billion in 2015.
