7. The Upward Manager- “When you manage up, you're disconnected from reality.” Cantrill, reminded the audience to pick two out of schedule, quality, and features, as one can't have all three. Idealists tend to focus on achieving all three.

 

 

 

 

8. The Nay Sayer –This prototype says “no” to almost every request, and in essence is sort of the Upward Manager’s opposite. The VPoE needs to balance the two tasks of keeping engineers focused, and being “optimistic enough to help out” without denying everyone.
