Bangalore: Japanese electronics major Sony declared a recall of 1.6 million LCD TVs worldwide including Europe, US and Japan. However, the company stated there would be no recall of its LCD TVs in India.
The company also said it would repair for free the affected products of its customers in India if a request is made. "Sony service person will visit and check, and repair if a faulty component is found, free of charge," the company stated to Times of India in a statement. KLV-40 W300A and KLV-40 X350A are the two affected models in India. "We have sold 3,200 units of the affected models in India between 2007 and 2008.
This accounts for 0.2 percent of the total products sold. However, till now, we have received no complaints," Sony officials added.
After a number of incidents of melting parts, the company decided to announce the recall. A component integrated in certain models of its 40 inch Bravia LCD TVs was damaged causing smoke or melting of a part of the cabinet ceiling due to overheating. Eleven such circumstances were reported to Sony from Japan for the products created in 2008.
