Bangalore: Supreme Court has taken response from government agencies, Telecommunications Minister Andimuthu Raja and the Central Bureau of Investigation on a public interest petition regarding the sale of wireless spectrum. In order to monitor an internal probe by CBI, the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is seeking a court-appointed team, reports P.S. Patnaik of Bloomberg.
"It's a politically sensitive case," said petitioner's lawyer Prashant Bhushan. The group is challenging a May 2010 judgment of the Delhi High Court, which dismissed the case against Raja and the government.
Raja belongs to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and is a key ally in PM Manmohan Singh's coalition government. The minister had decided to sell licences to phone operators in 2008 based on a price determined in 2001and this may have caused a loss of
267 billion ($6 billion) to the Government of India.
