Bangalore: Former Google CEO and present Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt in his special keynote address at the Mobile World Congress announced that the upcoming Android operating system update will be a combination of the present versions: Gingerbread and Honeycomb. He also stated the next Android's name will start with an 'I', which very well cements the idea of it being called Ice Cream Sandwich.
The next version will be Android 2.4 with elements from Google's tablet only Android Honeycomb. However, the features from Honeycomb that will feature in the upcoming version of Android have not been revealed by Google. It is speculated that the latest offering of Android will mostly be out at the Google I/O conference in May 2011.
Schmidt also intimated that they are working on a six month cycle for releasing a successive version. Regarding Nokia choosing Windows Phone 7 platform over Android, he said that Google would have liked Nokia choosing Android and added that the offer still remains open to Nokia.
