Mini Robot that runs through fire to help firefighters
Bangalore: Hoya Robot, a South Korean company, is developing a mini robot that can enter burning buildings and check for people and transmit data back to the firefighters. The Firefighters Assistant Robot can operate for up to 30 minutes in fires, and can withstand temperatures up to 320 Fahrenheit (160 degree Celsius). It can also survive falls of more than six feet and is water-resistant, according to CNET. The robot is very small in size and can fit in your palm and weighs only three pounds. It can travel at a speed on one foot per second. Mini robot is fixed up with cameras and lights and can transmit image, sound, temperature, smoke, and gas data to firefighters up to 54 yards away. After checking the data the firefighters can decide the course of action. Hoya robot took two years to develop this mini robot. They received funding from Ministry of Knowledge Economy. This is a first of its kind robot in Korea. 50 fire stations in Korea will soon receive 100 units for testing. Hoya plans to show off the Firefighters Assistance Robot at the International Robot Exhibition 2009 (iRex) in Tokyo in November.
