'Jugaad' technology may be able to get patents
New Delhi: The genius with which tiny and small entrepreneurs innovate and invent the home grown (Jugaad) technology may get patent protection. If a discussion paper by the industry ministry finally leads up to a law on this subject, 'Jugaad' technologies like onion seed transplanter, clay refrigerator (mitticool) and ribbed pan (tawa) will be patented to the inventors. However, these patents will have a lower protection period for the innovators - about 7 to 10 years, as against 20 years in the case of regular patents which are given under the Indian Patent Act. The patent protection for the home grown products will be technically called the "Utility Models". Such a practice is prevalent in 55 countries like China, Japan and Germany.
