California: Intel plans to ease the work of IT administrators by allowing them to manage the mobile devices from remote distance as well. Looking at the adoption of tablets by businesses, Intel hopes to implement some capabilities found in vPro platform in hardware and software to secure data from remote distance and support mobile devices like tablets.
vPro platform combines hardware and software to manage and secure PCs through wired and wireless networks and is currently available only for PCs and some low-end servers. Enterprises use tablets like Apple iPads for voice communication and viewing their documents. According to Lisa Watts, Director for ecosystem development for Intel Systems, "Company has been requested several times for vPro capabilities to be in companion devices beyond just PCs."
Enabling mobile services remotely sometimes involves loss of data but Intel wants to come up with the technology where while enjoying the technology thee is no fear of losing data. "We're trying to make that balance between security of the data and the device itself," says Watts.
Recently Intel introduced the version of vPro platform for PCs that enables IT managers to disable the stolen data on PC by sending text message. Laptops won't boot once the message is sent until a code provided by IT manager is used but data on the PCs will remain intact. If the storage device is encrypted then the data remains intact. Earlier version of vPro enabled laptop were disabled only through Wi-Fi or wired networks.
Antitheft feature of vPro also has GPS technology that helps in tracking laptops. "Intel is looking at 12 different usage models that could drive the design of such a platform. It's definitely taking a look at how the companion devices work with a VPro machine even as a first step is very interesting to us." says Watts.
vPro will push productivity to new levels while reducing costs with the built-in security and manageability of desktop and mobile PCs powered by Intel Core 2 processors. Intel vPro technology allows reducing visits to support PC by remotely monitoring, diagnosing, and repairing PCs even if they're shut down or the Operating System is non-responsive. New power-efficient designs help keep energy costs low and built-in security features help combat the expense of security threats.
