Bangalore: A theoretical concept for six years, IBM's innovation 'Racetrack' is a new kind of memory that when made into reality will change the way we store data and how fast it can be accessed on devices like mobiles and desktops.
The good news here is that the researchers are now one more step ahead in turning the concept into reality. IBM Fellow Stuart Parkin has been working on the technology since 2004.
The revolutionary memory will increase the storage capacity of gadgets by as much as 100 times. This would equal to about 500,000 songs and 3,500 movies on one device. Another benefit of the technology is that it consumes very little power that can enable the device to run for weeks rather than days or hours.
Racetrack can open a world of opportunities for laptops, smartphones, mobile devices and desktop computers. It works by automatically moving the data to where it can be used rather than how conventional memory works by seeking out the data it needs.
Parkin believes that with Racetrack it will be possible to develop laptops and mobile devices with considerably more memory in the same or smaller space.
