Google to showcase 'Smart TV'
San Francisco: Google, along with Sony, Intel and Logitech, is going to showcase a new technology called 'Smart TV'. The software, which will allow TV viewers to flip seamlessly among familiar shows, YouTube videos and home videos on their sets, is expected to be built into Internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. The new television platform will be unveiled by Google at a conference in San Francisco for 3,000 software programmers. However, it has not been disclosed when the first of these devices will be available to consumers. Google isn't the first online company to come up with the technology. Yahoo made Internet sites like Facebook and Twitter accessible on the TV. According to James McQuivey, Media Analyst with Forrester Research, over one million sets with a built-in Internet connection have been purchased already, and by 2011, 10 million sets are likely to be sold. With software inside televisions and set-top boxes, this technology will open up a new world of opportunities for Google, predicts McQuivey. Sony, one of the companies involved in the process, is likely to gain a lot if the product is a success. Being third in the television market, the success of Smart TV would affect Sony's position a lot.
