Bangalore: Blu-ray, the disc storage medium that supersedes the DVD format is gaining popularity among masses. It is widely being accepted as the one of the best media formats in the entertainment space. A recent study by research firm Futuresource revealed that the pre-recorded Blu-ray disc production is to reach over 400 million units in 2010, reports Don Reisinger of cnet News. The Blu-ray production figure for this year surpasses the 2009 production count by a 60 percent margin. However, Futuresource believes that the present figures will fade out in front of the Blu-ray shipments that will take place few years down the line. It predicts that the 2014 worldwide shipment of Blu-ray discs will touch two billion. Michael Boreham, Senior Consultant, Futuresource stated that much of the growth in the Blu-ray market is due to growing player ownership and falling disc prices. He also said that increase in the Blu-ray popularity helps to drive more "copy depth" in retail stores. Apart from all these factors, the stimulus to the Blu-ray growth will be the prospect of 3D. Fiona Hoy, Market Analyst, Futuresource said, "3D is ideally suited to Blu-ray, and starting in 2012, the analysts believe there will be very strong demand for 3D content, which will fuel additional [Blu-ray sales] growth." As the demand for Blu-ray technology is growing with time, the technology its replacing, DVD, will not have as much a bright future. In fact, a recent study by research firm In-Stat revealed that the total disc sales are expected to drop by $4.6 billion between 2009 and 2014.
