Washington: Apple has removed a WikiLeaks application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad from the App Store. The app lets users read secret U.S. diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks, reports Gregg Keizer of Computerworld.
The WikiLeaks App was removed from the App Store after noon on Monday, said Igor Barinov, the General Manager of Moscow-based Hint Solutions. Barinov, who developed the app, had been referred by Apple to several clauses in the App Store developer guidelines.
Apple's move came after U.S. companies like Amazon, Bank of America, MasterCard and PayPal terminated services for WikiLeaks. According to an Apple spokesperson, the company has removed the app as it has violated Apple's developer guidelines. It was approved by Apple on December 17.
The WikiLeaks application that costs $1.99 provides a mobile version of the WikiLeaks content, as well as access to its Twitter feed. According to Barinov, the app has been downloaded 4,434 times, and he would contribute $4,434 to WikiLeaks from his profit of $5,825.
