Amazon Kindle vs Sony Digital reader daily edition
Bangalore: The battle between Amazon and Sony continues as Sony has launched its third e-reader called Digital reader daily edition to challenge Amazon's Kindle. Sony already has Pocket edition and Touch edition which are available at $199 and $299, respectively. Sony's Digital daily edition reader is wireless and has a seven inch (17.8cm) touch screen which can be used to read books in portrait or landscape form and is priced at $399. Amazon's kindle has so far been the leader in the e-reader market. Even though it does not have a touch screen it has been wireless ever since its launch in 2007. Kindle is priced at $299 and a larger edition Kindle DX, which has a 9.7 inch screen, is priced at $489. Kindle DX is better suited for reading newspaper and magazines and offers 46 newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. Sony has so far made no deals with the newspapers according to Steve Haber, President of Sony's Digital Reading Business Division, but he said that there would be newspapers and magazines available on the Daily Edition when it is up for sale in December. Sony has also announced a deal with New York Public Library which will grant access to 29,000 electronic titles available on all Sony Readers. A reader can borrow and download a book on the reader which will expire after 21 days. Sony users can also download copies of public domain books which are scanned by Google from the New York Public Library (which is now more than one million). Sony has also announced that it would stop using a proprietary standard (which Amazon still uses) for e-books in favor of the ePub open format. By granting access to e-readers to millions of ebook and with the help of touch screen function, Sony has challenged Amazon head-on in the e-reader war.
