Bangalore: Social media like facebook , twitter and Google saw a huge jump in the internet traffic, following the news of Osama bin laden's death. Osama not only dominated the sphere of media, newspapers, TV Channels and Radio's but he also made it to the world of social media. Social media saw various exchanges of reactions, from curious questions to jokes on Osama's death. Celebrations were high on the social networking sites. Akamai which delivers about 20 percent of news content on the Web revealed that internet traffic surged by 28 percent in North America and 24 percent globally, compared to the average rates. The status of users in facebook was subjected to Osama's death. A page displaying Osama Bin Laden is dead showed 335,300 likes. Facebook also saw a 35 percent jump in user photo uploads for the evening, reported New York Times. Twitter experienced record breaking tweets on the very occasion. An average of 3,000 tweets per second was posted at the hours of 10:45 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. EST. It took a peak of 5,106 tweets per second at 11 p.m. There were 5,008 tweets posted every second when President Obama finished up his speech. The news of Osama's death has become the hot topic in the list of Google search trends. It was followed search words such as "Islamabad," "Navy Seals," "Al Qaeda," and "9/11." Akami saw a peak in traffic of more than 4.1 million page views every second for any related news of Osama after President Obama addressed the media at around 11:30 p.m. EST. Many received the news of Osama death from facebook and twitter instead of the news channels. This overwhelming internet traffic has reassured the firm positions of our social networking sites, and proves that it is here to stay for long.
