Bangalore: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is likely to use the data centre at the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) facility in Chennai for disaster recovery for its e-passport service. Dr. Omkar Rai, Senior Director, STPI said, "TCS will take the data centre on a seven-year lease and will annually pay around
3 crore to STPI. This is a major commercial business for us."
TCS was planning to implement the central government's ambitious
1,000 crore 'Passport Seva Project' at six plot locations from October and will take this to 77 by June 2010. "STPI is also likely to use Chennai data centre to promote various applications under www.India.in," said Dr Rai, on the sidelines of Connect2009, the ICT (Information Communication Technology) event organized by the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) in association with the Tamil Nadu government. The portal is a platform for information dissemination and knowledge sharing.
STPI and MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam) are jointly working on this venture. STPI has invited bids for setting-up two more data centres in Hyderabad and Delhi of 6,000 square feet each. It also plans to set up such centres in Chandigarh. "Data centre is going to be the future. The investment in the Chennai data centre is around Rs 30 crore, while it will cost much lesser in other centres," said Dr. Rai.
