San Francisco: The increasing number of tablet PCs being launched in the market could provide a $4.1 billion market opportunity for semiconductor firms by 2014. According to research firm In-Stat, 50 million units of various tablets could ship in 2014.
Based on bill-of-materials (BOM) estimates, initial pricing of mainstream tablets should be in the $400 to $500 range. According to In-Stat, vendors will also be able to capitalize on the new opportunity for batteries and displays for these systems. "Tablets have quickly become a high priority for competitors across the value chain, including mobile operators," said Jim McGregor, an Analyst at In-Stat.
By looking at the opportunity, many chip makers at the Consumer Electronics Show showcased their hardware that are targeted at tablet PCs, some of them are Freescale Semiconductor, Nvidia and Qualcomm.
