Sterilization: A Boon or Bane to "Growing" India?
As per the latest National Family Health Survey, 37 percent of Indian women have undergone sterilization as compared with 1 percent of men. Out of which, just 3 percent are on the pill and only 5 percent use condoms.
"Repeated surveys done in India say that in most cases sterilization is the first method [of birth control] people are using — which should not be the case. About one-fourth of the people [in a recent national health survey] did not have any information about a second method and about a third of that one-fourth did not have any information about the safety of the sterilization procedure. So there is no informed choice," added Das.
Though sterilization has its own dangers, many people continue to adopt it. Unfortunately, it is found that there is no real monitoring mechanism to guarantee that facilities follow according to the norms. This despite the fact that Supreme Court had forced to mandate safety and quality standards for sterilization in 2005.
The problem of growing population not only threaten the lives of the masses but also threaten the environment and a big hindrance in the country’s development and progress.
