Fremont: For a business enterprise, it is very important to make and sustain business relationships. Having a good relationship with the people who matter, is the best way of marketing your business.
Accept people for Whom they are
How many times have you been in a situation, where the other person wants you to change? Just remember the song "Numb" by Linkin Park, and it will give you an exact feel of what it feels like when someone else expects you to change according to their wishes. Accept people for whom they are rather than expecting them to change overnight. This not only makes them like themselves, but also like you more, as being un-judgmental and un-critical gives you a better chance of being allowed and followed as a leader.
Don't be Argumentative
If you want to gain the respect and the business, never argue--even if the other person is wrong. Try to politely put across your viewpoints, maybe lathered with humor, so that the other party does not take offense. Remember that the contract matters more than the person who is trying to be impossible. Who knows, they might be augmenting with you just to know whether you know the inside-out of what you want them to agree to? So just listen, and if you don't like what they are saying, just be polite enough to still listen and think about; after all, no one argues without a reason.
Be Appreciative and Attentive
How nice would it feel to have a customer, who is honest about expressing his or her feelings? A simple "thank you" might actually work wonders for your business. So be expressive when it comes to admiring those who have proved themselves to you. It would motivate them, and ensure that they stick with you.
Nothing bothers a person than when his or her audience is half-asleep, and the talk becomes a monologue. So be attentive while interacting with people, especially to the key persons, and even the most boring of the talks would become interesting.
Stay away from Complaining and be Courteous
No one likes to be an agony aunt, so don't keep cribbing about each and every matter. Destructive criticism is the most harmful aspect to any relationship, business relations included. If you crib about someone in his or her absence, it will create an image of being a back-stabber; and if you keep complaining about a particular person, it might put the person in a defensive mode and cause loss of trust.
A courteous person not only gains respect of others, but also creates an image for himself. By being considerate towards others, you will be able to connect to them on an emotional level. These positive values will reflect to you and help you to have a good relation with the people involved.
