The Evolution of Product Promotion
A matrix barcode, first designed for the automotive industry is slowly gaining popularity in other industries too, due to its ability to store large amounts of information and fast readability. Designed in 1994, the technology is seeing popularity in Japan, U.K., and many other countries. The trend is catching up like wildfire, with a company Skanz selling silicone bracelets, which allows anyone with a smartphone to get instant access to all the related information about the person, making them human hyperlinks. The codes are now being used across industries with newspapers, food chains, magazines all jumping onto the bandwagon. The companies are also using QR codes to host contests, where the users have to scan the codes in order to get some prizes. An extension of the trend is the JAGTAG, which requires the users to take a picture of the image using a camera phone and send it via MMS to the JAGTAG server. Both the QR code and the JAGTAG provide detailed information about the products, which is a novel way of promoting your products, with just a click.
