Startups that Succeeded by Changing Direction
Developed by Ludicorp, a Vancouver-based company founded by Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, Flickr was launched in 2004. It proved to be a great example of a feature becoming its own product. The root of Flickr lies in the development of an online role-playing game from Ludicorp. But, the founders eventually dropped the idea of gaming as Flickr's backend systems evolved away from the Game Neverending's codebase. They decided instead to focus on the larger potential of simplifying photo sharing on the web. Flickr was acquired by Yahoo! in 2005 for a reported $35 million.
