Bangalore: Sunnyvale based smartphone software startup MobileIron, has raised $11 million in second round of funding. This funding is led by Norwest Venture Partners, Storm Ventures and Sequoia Capital.
MobileIron, co-founded by two Indians, Suresh Batchu and Ajay Mishra, involves the creation of a virtual version of each employee's smartphone that runs on the corporate data center, allowing the employer to see how the phone is being used and to control company data on that device. The company's virtual smartphone platform is a device-agnostic tool that runs in the background of the device and relays usage information to an application behind the corporate firewall. This data can be used by IT companies to determine how to efficiently allocate resources for their enterprise mobility strategies. Founded in 2007, the California based firm, is looking to capitalize on the growing number of companies using smartphones. MobileIron is a company with 40 employees, who had been working on the development of a data management platform for smartphones, for two years in stealth mode.
It wants to provide businesses with specialized data in order to increase smartphone security and potentially cut costs. The growing consumer interest in emerging smartphone platforms like the iPhone and the Palm Pre creates a big opportunity for a company that can help enterprises feel comfortable with those phones, said Matt Howard, Norwest Partner and MobileIron Board Member. "There's a lot of pressure multi-dimensionally from a user wanting a certain type of device and a [Chief Information Officer] wanting certain types of capabilities. But, MobileIron allows people to have their cake and eat it, too," Howard added.
