Gadgets which have become Obsolete
Even before the audio cassettes became famous, were the reel-to-reel tape recorders, with the commercial name 'Magnetphon'. The compact audio cassette was invented by Philips in 1962, and used for audio storage, with the trademark name "Compact Cassette". During the 1980s, the cassettes became even more popular with the incoming of portable pocket recorders and hi-fi players, like Sony's Walkman-having a body not much larger than the cassette tape itself. Since the early 1990s, the notable pre-recorded cassettes saw a sharp decline. By 1993, the sale of cassettes accounted for only four percent of all the music sold, while the shipments of CD players reached five million. Since then, the pre-recorded cassette has seen a spiraling downfall, and most of the major U.S. music companies had discontinued them by the late 2002 or 2003.
